Bruxism/TMJ Disorders

Bruxism and TMJ disorders involve excessive teeth grinding or jaw clenching, often leading to jaw pain, tension, or damaged teeth.

We offer personalized care for patients experiencing bruxism (teeth grinding). These conditions can cause persistent discomfort and tension, often affecting the jaw, face, neck, and even contributing to headaches.

What Are Bruxism & TMJ Disorders?

Bruxism is the habitual clenching or grinding of teeth, commonly during sleep. TMJ disorders involve dysfunction or pain in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. These conditions often overlap and can present with:

  • Jaw pain or tightness
  • Headaches (especially in the temples)
  • Facial pain or tension
  • Tooth sensitivity or wear
  • Clicking or popping in the jaw joint
  • Difficulty opening the mouth fully

How Botox® Helps

Botox® is a well-established treatment for bruxism and TMJ disorders. When injected into the masseter and/or temporalis muscles, and sometimes into other muscles of mastication depending on your symptoms, Botox® helps relax overactive jaw muscles, reducing clenching, grinding, and associated pain.

Botox® treatment may:

  • Reduce jaw tension and facial pain
  • Alleviate tension-related headaches
  • Minimize tooth wear from grinding
  • Soften the appearance of overly prominent jaw muscles

Most patients begin to experience relief within 1–2 weeks, and results typically last 3–6 months.

Physician Consultation Available

With a referral from your primary care provider, our physicians offer consultation and evaluation for jaw-related tension, pain, or bruxism. We’ll work with you to confirm the diagnosis and determine if Botox® is appropriate as part of your management plan.

Please note: Botox® treatment for TMJ and bruxism is a private service and not covered under BC MSP. A $175 injection fee applies to each treatment session.
