Corticosteroid Injections image
  • What are corticosteroid injections used for?

Corticosteroid injections are used to reduce inflammation and promote healing in a variety of skin conditions. At our clinic, they are commonly used to treat acne cysts, keloid and hypertrophic scars, alopecia areata, and scarring alopecia.

  • How do corticosteroid injections work?

They work by delivering anti-inflammatory medication directly into the affected area, helping to calm overactive immune responses, reduce swelling, and accelerate healing.

  • What can I expect during the procedure?

The treatment area will be cleaned, and a fine needle will be used to inject corticosteroid medication into the skin. The procedure takes just a few minutes and involves minimal discomfort, often described as a brief sting or pressure.

  • Is there any downtime after treatment?

Most patients experience minimal downtime. Mild redness or tenderness may occur at the injection site but usually resolves within a few days. Avoid rubbing or applying products to the area for 24 hours.

  • When will I see results?

Results vary depending on the condition but typically begin to appear within a few days to a few weeks.

  • Are there any risks or side effects?

Corticosteroid injections are generally safe, but potential side effects include skin thinning, lightening of the skin at the injection site, or temporary tenderness. These are uncommon and will be discussed during your consultation.

  • Who should not receive corticosteroid injections?

This treatment is not suitable for individuals with active skin infections at the site, known allergies to corticosteroids, or certain medical conditions. Your provider will assess your suitability during the consultation.

  • Do I need a referral?

Yes. A referral from your primary care provider is required before an appointment can be booked. This ensures a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment planning.
