Photorejuvenation (IPL)

A targeted light-based treatment that reduces redness, sun damage, and pigmentation for a clearer, more even complexion

Image of Photorejuvenation (IPL)

Photorejuvenation with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a safe, non-invasive treatment that targets pigmentation, sun damage, and redness—leaving your skin visibly brighter and more even-toned. IPL reduces age spots, freckles, broken capillaries, and flushing caused by rosacea by delivering precise pulses of light that heat and break down unwanted pigment or vessels.

Common Treatment Areas

Face, neck, chest, back, arms, and hands

What to Know Before Your Treatment

To prepare your skin and ensure a safe and effective IPL session:

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for at least 2 weeks before treatment. Tanned or sunburned skin increases the risk of burns or pigmentation changes.
  • Discontinue self-tanning products and spray tans for at least 2 weeks prior to your appointment.
  • Discontinue use of retinoids, exfoliants, or photosensitizing products at least 3 days prior
  • Avoid waxing or depilatory creams in the treatment area for 48 hours prior.
  • Inform your technician of any medications, skincare products, or medical conditions you may have.
  • Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin and avoid applying any lotions, perfumes, or serums on the day of treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Photorejuvenation (IPL) image
  • What does IPL treat?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is used to treat sun damage, age spots, freckles, facial redness, broken capillaries, and rosacea-related flushing. It can also improve overall skin tone and texture for a more radiant complexion.

  • Is IPL the same as laser treatment?

Not exactly. While both use light energy, IPL uses a broad spectrum of light rather than a single focused wavelength like lasers. This allows it to target multiple skin concerns at once, including pigment and vascular issues.

  • Does IPL hurt?

Most patients describe the sensation as similar to a light snap from a rubber band or a mild warmth. It’s generally well-tolerated, and a cooling gel is applied beforehand to enhance comfort.

  • Is there any downtime?

Downtime is minimal. You may experience redness or mild swelling for a few hours to a day. Pigmented spots may darken before flaking off over the next 5–7 days.

  • When will I see results?

Results begin to appear within one to two weeks. Skin becomes more even toned, with reduced pigmentation and redness. Multiple sessions typically deliver the most noticeable improvements.

  • Can IPL be used on all skin types?

IPL is best suited for lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–III). Darker skin types may have a higher risk of pigmentation changes, so other treatment options may be recommended.

  • What areas can be treated?

Common treatment areas include the face, neck, chest, back, arms, and hands—anywhere sun damage or discoloration is a concern.

  • Can I wear makeup after IPL?

Yes, you can usually apply makeup the next day—as long as the skin is not irritated. We recommend using gentle, non-comedogenic products and avoiding exfoliants or active ingredients for several days.
